The Senior section was formed in 1966 and was originally called “The Veterans”. In 2005 the section had 100 members. This guide attempts to record information about the history of the section and to make a record of the winners of all of the trophies. Further information, facts, corrections or anecdotes will be included in a future edition.

Seniors Championship This competition is played on the first Wednesday in June. It is a Medal play competition from the white tees. The player with the best gross score wins the Prentice Salver and is declared “the senior section champion”. Winner’s name is inscribed on a club honours board. Up to 2003 the player with the next best gross score won the Jubilee Jug. In 2004 the Jug was awarded to the player, aged 75 years or over, with the best gross score A handicap prize is awarded for the same card. The player with the lowest net score wins the Noel Highton Challenge Trophy. Up to 2005 a player was eligible to win or be runner up for both trophies. From 2006 a player can only win one trophy. Don Carmichael donated the Jubilee Jug to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the senior section. Don was senior captain in 1992. The Noel Highton Challenge Trophy was donated in 1992. Noel Highton joined the club in 1981. Noel was a tall, slim, elegant golfer who had played off a single figure handicap in his prime. One of his claims to fame was his knowledge of real ale, both taste and cost as he was a qualified accountant whose clients included Jennings Brewery in Cumbria. |

Farmer This is the summer rolling competition. It consists of both Medal play and Stableford competitions between May and September. There are 3 Medal rounds and 7 Stableford rounds. The Farmer score is the best TWO net Medal scores minus the best FOUR Stableford scores. The player with the lowest Farmer score receives the Farmer Shield, irrespective of handicap. The winner of the other division receives The Hansley - Farmer Trophy.
Phil Farmer was the senior captain in 1984. He was an influential member of the Seniors’ section committee for several years. He was also a member at Fairthorne Manor Golf Club. Arthur Hansley is a member of the Seniors’ section committee and is renowned for playing all fairway shots with a five-wood, even from 10 yards. |

Summer Eclectic This is operated in conjunction with the Farmer competitions. The eclectic score is the lowest gross score at each hole for the duration of the Farmer programme. A gross score is not counted if no Stableford points were scored. No handicap allowance is deducted from the total eclectic score. The competition is in two divisions, upto 18 and 19 or over, as decided by the handicaps on the day of the first Farmer Competition.

George Kell was a member of the Senior section. John Ford was a member of the Senior section. He was a lecturer in Higher Education and was a qualified glider pilot. He died in 1999. |

FletcherThis is the winter rolling competition. It consists of between 10 and 12 Stableford competitions between October and March. The Fletcher score is the best five (or six) Stableford scores. The player with the highest Fletcher score receives the Fletcher Salver, irrespective of handicap. The winner of the other division receives The Hansley - Fletcher Trophy. If tied the Salver or the Trophy is shared; there is no count back system.

Senior OpenThis is a major event in the seniors’ year. The senior secretary invites 60 visitors from clubs with whom the seniors have matches, plus a few other local clubs. 30 senior members play so that a home player hosts two visitors. Play is from the first and 10th tees. Yellow tees are used and scoring is by Stableford off full handicap. Best Home player receives the Cy Thomas Cup.
Cy Thomas was a member of the Club for many years except for a short period when he returned to his native Wales. He had been a teacher. He died suddenly after playing in a Senior competition. His wife donated the trophy in his memory. Professional TrophyThe winners and runners up in all of the Senior trophy competitions are invited to play 18 holes of medal play on the third Wednesday in October. The winner receives the Professional Trophy. This is the last competition in the Seniors’ programme.

Bates Cup This is the winter singles match play knock out competition. Matches played off ¾ of handicap difference from the WHITE tees. The competition was split into 2 divisions in 2017. The trophy donated by Bill Foulkes is used for Div 2 and a new trophy is used for Div 1.
Bill Bates was a member of the Senior section. He had been an organizer of youth boxing. When the local groups closed he donated The Bates boxing trophy to the senior section. A golfer replaced the figure of a boxer but the trophy lay unused until 1990. Bill Bates kept a fish and chip shop and that his wife was involved with the golf club catering. Corbett CupThis is the spring match play knock out competition for pairs. Four ball better ball matches played off ¾ of difference off the lowest handicap from the WHITE tees. The first round is played in February and the final by end of May.
Graham Corbett was Senior captain in 1987. He was a Lt. Colonel in The Royal Signals and for many years local councilor for Meon Valley. He left Corhampton in 2002 to live in Antwerp Belgium. |

Parrett Cup This is the summer, singles match play knock out competition. Strokes received are ¾ of the difference from lowest handicap. Top named player must offer three dates to his opponent, not Saturday or Sunday. If unable to play before the closing date for the round, then the top named player goes through to the next round.
Sid Parrett was the first captain of the seniors when they were formed in the autumn of 1966. They were called “The Veterans”. He served for two years 1967 and 1968. He came from a prominent Wickham family, kept a dairy farm and ran a milk round that supplied the local area. |

The Hanson Trophy This is the Seniors’ challenge competition. Players select their own partners for a qualifying round of four ball better ball Stableford competition played off full handicap from the white tees. The tee times are drawn. The Senior captain and Senior vice captain play as a pair. Each member of the pair with the best score in the qualifier usually receive a prize such as a golf glove, donated by Rupert Hanson.
Captains’ Cup The competition, is played in April is a Stableford off full handicap from the yellow tees with tee off times between 09:00 and 10:00. Players aged 70 to 74 receive ONE courtesy shot, 75 to 79 receive TWO courtesy shots and those aged 80 or over receive THREE courtesy shots. The current Senior Captain and Senior Vice Captain are invited to play but are not eligible to win the trophy. Past captains who are no longer members of the club are invited to play and receive the courtesy of the course. A lunch follows the competition and by tradition it is roast beef, Yorkshire pudding followed by apple strudel. Some only attend the lunch.

Lindley CupThis is a foursomes Stableford competition with a draw for partners. It is played on a Wednesday in the middle of July. The draw for partners and starting times is made two weeks before the competition. The competition was changed from pairs to 4 man team in 2017. The old trophy was used up to 2017 and had a piece added on to the base with a deep silver ring to make more room for names
Frank Lindley was Club captain in 1950, Senior captain in 1972, and Club president from 1970 to 1983. During the 1950s he was the secretary of the Club. The Norman Taylor Spring and Autumn Bogey Competition A bogey competition is match play against the course. In the seniors’ bogey competitions the players receive their full handicap and shots are taken at holes indicated by the stoke index. Players play each hole against their own net par. If they beat net par they mark their card with their score and a plus (+). If they equal net par they mark the card with their score and a half (0). If net par is not achieved the card is marked with a minus (-) and the ball should be picked up. The result is decided by deducting the number of minus holes from the number of plus holes. The winner is the player who finishes the most holes up against par.

Payton TankardThis is a medal play, qualifying competition played from the white tees off full handicap. It is played during May in one division. A new competition and trophy, the Payton Tankard for 75's & over, was introduced in 2018.
Pip Payton was Senior captain in 1971 and the secretary of the club in the 1970’s. He has been branch manager of Lloyd Bank. He died in 1986. His ashes were scattered on the course. Hall of Fame Seniors’ CupsThis is a Stableford, qualifying competition played from the white tees off full handicap. It is usually played in conjunction with a Farmer Stableford but in one division with a maximum handicap of 24. The winner is invited to represent the club in a regional final.
The Cup was presented by Bill Foulkes who was Senior Captain in 2004. Bill is the owner of the sailing chandlery “Aladdin’s Cave”. |

David Coleman Seniors TrophyBefore the trophy was donated in 2005 the competition was known as The Seniors Invitation. Each member of the Senior section may invite a member of another club to play with them in a better ball Stableford competition. Their partner must be over the age of 60 years and hold a valid handicap from another golf club. This competition is normally played on a Friday in September. The trophy is “The Development of the Golf Ball” and is commonly referred to as “The Colemanballs”.
The Trophy was donated in 2005 by David Coleman who was Senior Captain in 2002. David was a senior lecturer in Manufacturing Systems at Portsmouth University and an honorary Fellow of the Institute of Quality Assurance. He always opened a speech with “can you all hear me” for which he expected the reply “Yes but I do not mind changing places with someone who cannot”. David left Corhampton Golf Club in 2006 to join Rowlands Castle Golf Club as he only lived a short distance from Rowlands Castle. Anniversary SalverThe Anniversary Salver was first played for in 2007 in celebration of the fortieth birthday of the Seniors' Section. A new Anniversary Salver has been introduced for 75's & Over from 2018
The Anniversary Salver was donated by John Young, who was senior captain in the 40th year of the seniors section in 2007. John was employed as a branch manager of Barclays Bank in Bishop's Waltham and took up golf when he moved to Bishop's Waltham from Dorset. He joined Corhampton golf club in 1984. Regretfully John passed away August 2011. Ken Cantle SalverThe Salver is played for annually in September or October. The winner of the Salver is the player with the best Stableford score, although there is no runner up there is a monetary prize for the player with the best Stableford score on the first nine holes. The salver can be run in conjunction with the Farmer or Fletcher if the playing programme is congested.
Ken Cantle joined Corhampton Golf Club in 1961, he was made an honorary member in 2006. Ken donated the Salver in 2009. Turkey TrotIndividual Stableford Competition. Sponsored by Messrs. Grovers the Butcher of Bishops Waltham who provides a voucher for the competition winner to redeem at his shop. The voucher is collected by a Section Member prior to the date of the competition.
New Captain's Cup‘A ½ Pint for a ½ Round’. The New Captain’s Cup was presented by Peter Langrish, the Section’s Captain in 2010 and 2011. It is played for on the day of the Senior Men’s’ Section AGM. The format of this Competition is reflected in the inscription engraved on the trophy which is a ½ Pint tankard. A qualifying 9 Hole individual Stableford competition. Winner may be determined by count-back.
Scratch CupPresented in 2011 by Geoff Staley, a member of the Section for several years A scratch match-play knock-out competition for Division 1 category players.
HOF JugPresented in memory of Bill Foulkes, by Mrs. Sandy Foulkes, in 2010. The runner up of the Hall of Fame receives the Jug. Individual Stableford Competition

MementosA certificate and a memento, or “replica”, are presented to the winner of a trophy. If a trophy is shared then both receive a certificate and memento. If a member wins more than one trophy they receive only one memento and one certificate that records all trophies that were won. If a member achieves a hole in one during the year they receive a certificate and a memento engraved “hole in one”.
